Chesterfield ignore Football League relegation by celebrating local cup win instead

Chesterfield were officially relegated from League Two after Morecambe drew 0-0 with Cambridge on Tuesday night.

The Spireites, who parted company with manager Jack Lester at the weekend, have slipped out of the Football League for the first time since 1921.

As relegation was being confirmed, the club’s official account spent the evening keeping supporters updated with the final of the Derbyshire Senior Challenge Cup.

It looks like the club hoped it their fans wouldn’t notice, but it completely backfired.

Chesterfield also have cancelled their 2017/18 Player of the Year award just days before it was due to be presented after a club statement released claimed that club officials had become aware of a plan to ‘scupper’ the voting!
