CBD in Sports: The New Way to Promote Mental Health?

For years, athletes have been looking for new and innovative ways to improve their performance. Now, it seems that CBD might be the answer. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants. Unlike THC, CBD does not have any psychoactive effects. This means that it will not get you high. However, CBD does have many potential health benefits. Some studies have shown that CBD can help with anxiety, depression, and pain relief. 

With the World Anti-Doping Agency removing CBD from its list of banned substances, more and more athletes are turning to CBD to help them with their training. But does it really work? Let’s take a look at the science behind CBD and see if it could be the new way to promote mental health in sports.

How Does CBD Work? 

CBD works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body. It does this by regulating various functions like sleep, appetite, pain, and immunity. 

The body produces endocannabinoids, which are cannabinoids that bind to cannabinoid receptors. There are two types of cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are mostly found in the brain and central nervous system. CB2 receptors are found in the immune system. 

CBD binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors. However, it has a stronger affinity for CB2 receptors. This is why CBD is thought to be immunosuppressive. By binding to these receptors, CBD can help to regulate various functions in the body. 

Benefits of CBD 

Now that we know how CBD works, let’s take a look at some of the potential benefits of taking CBD for mental health in sports. 

CBD has been shown to be effective in reducing anxiety and depression in both animal and human studies. In one study, 24 people with social anxiety disorder were given either 600 mg of CBD or a placebo before giving a public speech. The group that received the CBD had significantly lower levels of anxiety than the placebo group (1). 

CBD has also been shown to be effective in treating pain. A study published in The Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD was effective in reducing chronic inflammation and pain in rats (2). This is thought to be due to the fact that CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors that are responsible for pain perception. 

CBD has also been shown to improve sleep quality. A study on rats found that CBD increased total sleep time as well as improved REM sleep (3). This is thought to be due to the fact that CBD oil can reduce anxiety and pain, two things that can interfere with sleep.
