Blackburn make cheeky Netflix dig at Sunderland after final whistle

Blackburn make a cheeky Netflix dig at Sunderland after the final whistle of their 2-0 Championship victory on Tuesday night.

Rovers went top of the second tier standings as Ben Brereton Diaz’s stunning goal on his 100th Blackburn start helped them to the win.

Ben Brereton Diaz put Rovers ahead when he superbly curled a left-footed effort into the top corner from the edge of the box, seconds after Sunderland had seen a penalty appeal turned down.

Scott Wharton’s close-range header not long after half time put the hosts in control despite a hint of offside.

Sunderland pushed on in an attempt to get back into the match but they couldn’t find a way past the home defence as Ryan Hedges’ effort from almost halfway with the final kick of the game glanced the Sunderland post.

A big three points for Rovers, added with Norwich’s loss at home to Luton Town, sees them go two points clear at the top of the Championship, although Burnley, Sheffield United and QPR could all go above them if they win on Wednesday.

In light of the news last week that a third season of the popular ‘Sunderland ’till I die’ Netflix series would be coming showing their promotion to the Championship, it saw Blackburn with an opportunity to make a comment on it via the tannoy. At the final whistle, fans and players heard “Put that on Netflix.”

Blackburn’s Jon Dahl Tomasson: “A brilliant finish, I was surprised. I wish I could have scored a goal like Ben did. Ben is a brilliant player. That ability to score goals, we love that, and beautiful goals as well. He’s always a threat. He always gets chances, he works hard for the team as well. I’ve said it before, when you see that boy coming in in the morning, he’s like a young boy, five or six years old, just getting that ball. Just wants to get that ball and play outside. That love for the game is brilliant to see.

“The ability and finishing is extremely good of course. I think he’s enjoying it as well. Another goal for him and I think he was man of the match for Sky. It’s been a fantastic week. We are happy with the result, happy with the performance, and the atmosphere, and we’re thinking about Birmingham.”

Sunderland’s Tony Mowbray: “On the bench, they were saying it looked like a stonewall penalty, and the ref was adamant it wasn’t. What do you do? Talk about Brereton’s amazing finish, but we could have been 1-0 up with a penalty. It was 22 seconds, the Sky people told me. After that, we were 1-0 down.

“It was a bit deja vu for us. Dominating possession of the game and not having the key component in any football team to win football matches. We’ve been without him for six or seven games now. There is lots of good stuff. I’ve just said to them when you get your centre-forward back, you will win lots of football matches if you can create as many opportunities around the box and with a centre forward with the movement and capabilities of Ross Stewart. In the meantime, we have to keep working and find ways to be more ruthless and get more people into the box.”

As Blackburn make a cheeky Netflix dig at Sunderland after the final whistle, fans had their say on the game…

@KyleWicksAF: Great performance tonight. Tactics were spot on. Got lucky with a few decisions, but that’s not to take away what was a great performance. So happy for Garret. He took his opportunity tonight and shows just how good our youth really is! Top of the league!!!

@Joelholligan: Hyam and brittain signings of the season

@Gattacca69: It’s absolutely filthy how bad we mugged Coventry off for Hyam 😂 what a class signing.

@_Aaron_Holt_01: Can JDT bring his dad every match?

@Marksy2011: What a shift 🔵⚪️ #brfc

@mr_maack: So many terrific performances tonight. Such a well-deserved victory. #topoftheleague 😁🙌

@joshmontage656: Best of luck for the season lads, not our night

@Banno1289: And you 👍🏼 unfortunate with your striker situation as you may have scored a couple if you had a focal point! Our goals probably shouldn’t have stood but we’ve been shafted a fair few times this season so about time something went for us.

@andywatton: Good result, good win – top of the league ⬆️ Sunderland weren’t too bad for a newly promoted team, but we could play for another 3 hours and they still wouldn’t score.

@RealMad22400995: In the prem that finishes 0-0 and we would of had a pen, refreshing to see both teams play it on the ground and not time waste.. Having no strikers are hampering us atm, GL for the rest of the season 👍🏽

@Leap_year_man: Get in there you beauty!!! Top of the league, Diaz is a beast, great team effort from the lads! Not too comfortable with us sitting so deep second half but we got the job done. Impressive win for such a young side, I’m buzzing with that 🙌🏻🔵⚪️

@Fotballteologen: Lost 7 out of 16 games… top of the League! I love Championship 😂

@mackem49000: Good game and a fantastic goal but I think we should have had a penalty before you scored.. your defence was awesome.. all the best for the rest of the season 🔴⚪️🔴😉👍

@FTM1042: Best of luck for rest of season always a tough match at Ewood park. Hope the ball boy is okay as well I saw some of our fans was giving him a bit of stick but he looked like a strong boy. Good luck and see you all at stadium of light on Boxing Day

@JamieSAFC_: You lot a fucking good like. Shame the referees effected the game so much but honestly won’t be surprised to see you up in the prem next season

@deseawolf: Can’t fault them tonight to be honest. The officials have cost us yet again. Up there with the worst refereeing I’ve seen. We move on tho, these performances will turn into points

@SimmsSZN: Good to see the EFL referees finally getting 3 points on the board

@SAFC_Luke_2703: Bennette and ba to start Saturday

@emzyoung123: Referee 2-0 Sunderland

@p0rksavage: Christ throw a striker into the mix and we really can beat anyone in this league ! Keep the faith 🔴⚪️🔴⚪️🔴

@jakesafcftm: both goals shouldn’t have counted 👍🏻

@AdamGibson112: Warra win for Craig Pawson

@LifeSafc4: Didn’t really deserve to lose I don’t think. First goal should have been a pen the other way and second was offside. Officials cost is again and I won’t be surprised if TM is fuming after

@KyleWicksAF: You were unlucky tonight gents. Ref and linesman did us a few favours. But no doubt you’ll get the officials in your favour in a coming game. Best of luck for the rest of the season

@mackem49000: 2-0 to the ref but it is criminal we went into this season with two strikers.. we’re creating but missing a striker terribly.. terrible by the club.. but another fantastic effort by the boys🔴⚪️🔴

@Nige_1969: We should have won, if that penalty was given, if we scored of course. Their 1st goal wouldn’t have happened, and their 2nd goal was definitely offside, just not according to a Premier ref demoted to Championship for tonights match..

@ItsRoverZ: Brilliant game, second half you really brought it to us and we had to hold firm, in the prem we don’t score either of our goals but we have to take it when it’s given to us as we have some bad decisions go against us in the past, all the best for the rest of the season!
