Barnet manager Dean Brennan fumes at officials after York go 11 games unbeaten with 3-1 win

Barnet manager Dean Brennan fumes at officials after York City go 11 games unbeaten with a 3-1 win on Tuesday evening.

Malachi Fagan-Walcott made a mistake with Harrison Male rushing out and slid in on Zak Brunt with his feet in a 50-50 just outside York’s box.

He felt that the Minstermen should have gone down to 10 men, claiming it to be a clear foul and to prove it, Zak had an injury on his leg.

The result means that Barnet fall to third, York go second and Forest Green, who beat Ebbsfleet, go top of the National League.

Brennan said, per York Press: “I thought there was a huge refereeing moment in the game, where we have pressed them and the ball has been turned over.

“Brunty has got a gash in his shin, honestly it is about four inches long.

“Their goalkeeper has two-footed him, it’s terrible refereeing and a really poor challenge.

“I’m not having a go at the lad, he’s trying to make a challenge and win the ball, but it’s a red card, and a big moment in the game.

“I thought that the referee didn’t have the minerals to execute what should have happened there.”

“There were some good players on both teams and two managers who play on the front foot, play with speed, play with energy.

“It’s two teams that are well coached.

“The difference in the game in the end were the two errors that we made, and that obviously goes for them.

“I thought that it was a very tight game. I thought that in the first-half, we had some exceptional opportunities to go up one or two.

“They had a chance right at the start of the first-half, where Hayesy has made a good save, but it was a tight game.

“It was a good game for our division really, a top game, two different contrasts in systems, similar styles, but the systems are different.

“At the end of the day we have lost tonight because of two errors, we haven’t done enough when we turn the ball over in their half and pressed them.

“We got fantastic opportunities, Idris [Kanu] has missed a great chance at the back post in the first-half, Nicke [Kabamba] had basically a one-on-one when he’s mis-controlled the ball.

“We’ve just got to do better in those scenarios, and then it is a different game.

“The timing of their first goal was an absolute killer, and I have seen the second goal back, the ‘keeper should save it.

“I thought that our game plan was right, we just didn’t get ourselves further ahead and sod’s law, Marvin scores against us.

“To be fair to York, they’ve invested heavily, have an excellent manager and the boy Pearce is a killer when he gets his chance.

“All in all, we take our medicine because we have to move on as quick as we can to the next game.

“None of these games, no matter who you play, whether you play York, Braintree, Forest Green, whoever, no game is easy.

“I thought it was a good advert.”

York boss Adam Hinshelwood said, per York Press: “Full credit to the players tonight, I thought that they were tremendous.

“The fact that we are at this stage and can even compete with Barnet is a testament to the players really, I thought that the only way that they were going to get back into the game was from our lack of concentration and gifting them opportunities.

“We’re disappointed with the goal that we gave away, I thought that we could have dealt with that situation better.

“There’s loads for us to improve on, but in the main it was a really top performance that backed up Saturday’s performance.

“It was gritty at times, we dug in, defended the box well when they have got some real firepower.

“I thought our defenders were excellent.

“It’s a testament to the squad that we have got here.

“Ty [Tyrese Sinclair] had an unbelievable game on Saturday and was disappointed not to start, we had to speak to him before the game and let him know what a big player he is for us.

“Ty has come on and had a big impact, he has pressed brilliantly for the second goal.

“Ollie, again, has worked hard up top.

“Joe Felix, shows his versatility in a new position, I think he’s only got to play in goal and in centre-back and he’s covered every position for us.

“He was excellent in that position and did brilliantly for the first goal, a well-worked goal and Marv got onto the end of it.”

On Tony McMahon, Adam continued: “He was missing his set-pieces by about 15 to 20 yards from where it was meant to go!

“We were poor from set-pieces, it’s something that we have got to improve on because it’s a big part of the game.

“We’ve had at least five corners there that were way off the mark, it’s a way of winning games of football so we have got to get better at that.

“The credit really has to go to Tony McMahon, he’s a bit of a free-kick specialist, he works after training with a few of the boys on their technique.

“I’m really pleased that Hunty managed to make brilliant contact with it, it was a big moment in the game, a great comeback and to go ahead in the game at that time, attacking our fans, was massive.

“I think you are starting to see the Ollie Pearce that I have seen for the last six or seven seasons.

“You see him in those positions in front of goal and there is only one place that the ball is going.

“He’s full of confidence and is really loving it, but what’s not to love?

“A near enough full house on a Tuesday night, passionate fans, he has become a top player for us.”

On Armstrong: “He was obviously a bit disappointed that he didn’t start on Saturday, but I had to say that he was going to get his opportunity tonight.

“His work rate, his pressing, it’s a massive part of his game but I think that his third goal now that he has added, which is big.

“It’s something that we want to keep challenging Marv with, getting goals for us.

“A lot of players are chipping in now at the top end of the pitch, there’s goals and it’s good to see.”

Here’s how fans reacted as the Barnet manager Dean Brennan fumes at officials after York go 11 games unbeaten with a 3-1 win…

Andy Lea: I have to admit when the challenge happened I thought the challenge was very naughty from male and lucky he could have walked if seen

Rachel Taylor: What challenge by Male ? Must have missed that one !

Rob Fitzgerald: walcott made a mistake and Male rushed out and slid in with his feet just outside his box. I said at the time if that challenge was by an outfield players it’s given as a foul. I thought it was a 50/50 but Male definitely got away with one.

Robin Bowes: Watching from the top of EE, I thought Male was lucky with that challenge. He definitely jumped in with both feet.

James David: I saw that as was sat in same block. Hope Dipo is ok!

James David: He was very animated in his dugout! We were sat behind him. He was moaning all game

Ian Mcmanus: is there a rule where players have to wear shin pads/guards as there number 15 wasn’t wearing them

David Holder: they all have to wear them but some are the size of postage stamps nowadays

Karl Hardman: I always like listening to Dean Brennan however I cannot say I agree with his idea that MALEs challenge was a straight red.

Gavin Mercer: Deffo looked very naughty from where I was sat, proper crunched him, and that’s why the ref can come again 🤣

Mark Copeland: Not sure about his comments on the challenge by Male? Never a sending off.

David Tute: you sure Mark ? You’re old school now. I thought we got away with one there, thankfully.

Connor Hinchliffe: Was sat behind him in the dugout today. Him and his assistant were slaughtering his players, above and beyond anything I’ve ever heard/seen by a manager. Wouldn’t like to be playing under those 2, assistant calling their #9 a “donkey”….. absolute arse of a bloke

Andrew Parkes: Fair play to him. Balanced and fair

Jamie Scarborough: He’s pretty fair to be honest and my josh who is an attacking midfielder agreed it was a horror tackle from Male I think justgerronwivit!! Mentions the crowd being a massive factor too !! Massive 👊
