10th tier club call off games as management team and chairman quits

A 10th tier club have had to call off a number of games as the management team and chairman Lee Morris quits over a ‘broken promise’.

He had been in the dual role as boss and chairman at Armthorpe Welfare – but the departure of him and his management team as led to the club’s next three matches to be postponed.

Morris was named as boss in November 2020, before taking the job of club chairman in March 2022, but it seems his stay has now come to a sudden end.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Armthorpe Welfare have unfortunately had to take the decision to postpone our next three matches due to the sudden resignation of the management team. This means that Saturday’s home game against Nostell MW, Wednesday evening’s game at Retford United and next Saturday’s game at Staveley MW have had to be postponed.

The committee were informed on Thursday night of the management team’s decision and efforts to try and get them to reconsider were not forthcoming.

The club would like to place on record its thanks to Lee Morris and Rhys Meynell (as well as recently Nathan Helliwell) and their players for their efforts over the last nearly three years which saw last season become one of our best in recent memory.

The club are therefore looking to receive expressions of interest from prospective new managers who should in the first instance email armthorpe.welfare@hotmail.co.uk with a footballing CV and their credentials to assemble a side to compete at this level of the non-league game.

STATEMENT FROM MORRIS:

“My time has come to an end at Armthorpe Welfare FC, it’s been a privilege to manage the club over the last 2 1/2 years, and Chairman of the club for the past 12 months.

“We, as a group have taken the club from a relegation battle every season, to missing out on the playoffs by 1 point last season [in the Northern Counties East League Division One] on a shoe string budget, unfortunately the club was unable to meet our financial obligation agreed to back myself and my management team Rhys Meynell and Nathan Helliwell.

“I want to thank everyone of the players both past and present, the current group I had a meeting with tonight and let me say this we will meet again, best bunch I have ever worked with!!

“Can’t wait for my next role.”

Here’s how fans reacted as the 10th tier club call off a number of games as their management team and chairman quits over a ‘broken promise’…

Karb: Appear to be going through a difficult time, with their next three games being called off. Hope whatever the issue is isn’t too major.

Stuart Turner: Surprised the League has allowed you to postpone these matches, surely you can field a team which is managed by reserve management or youth manager.

@Lukesmudgers: Embarrassing decision to postpone the games if they can’t field a team the opposition should be awarded the win and points all this does is gives them time to regroup and get points at a later date

@NathanHelliwel4: I’m sure they can field a team that’s why they have a development squad! End of the day you pay peanuts you get monkeys

@CraigWalley9: Embarrassing teams asking for wins every club struggles nowadays with budgets and keeping clubs going is so hard. Give them time to rebuild and keep a club going which is more important and 3 points

@HarrySh90182976: I’m sure you’ll get back on track soon, no man is bigger than the club. Good luck with the next appointment 👍

@Bruce1852975634: Should be a 3-0 win for the opposition clearly can’t fulfill the fixture 🤔

@AlanBeresford7: Not good to hear, hope things are sorted soon and your back with us.

@Rowey3508: Correct decision any talk of a 3-0 victory for these postponed games is a football league issue which Armthorpe welfare is not subject to with its non-league status.

@shxmshots_: Wtf 😂

@Gazz_TheRoverL: All the players walked out as well I heard.
